The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) operates under the Territory’s Environment Protection Authority Act 2007. This Act delivers a unique EPA designed to be a leader in driving sustainable development thinking and practice in the Northern Territory.

The EPA provides independent strategic advice to Government, businesses and the community, and has significant independent powers to publicly recommend contemporary legislative and policy frameworks.

The Northern Territory's EPA is not responsible for undertaking environmental regulation directly. Instead the EPA focuses on improving guidelines and standards for environmental practice, monitoring and evaluation. The EPA also has the power to scrutinise the operations and systems of Northern Territory Government agencies to ensure environmental monitoring and regulation is undertaken in accordance with endorsed standards and practices.
